Montclair Historical Society Program- Old Home Researching plus

Great first  session of a 4 part one sponsored by the Montclair Historical Society on ' Your Old House' How to preserve, or sensitively remodel your home' was conducted by a panel of historians , restoration experts and preservationists. Memorial Service for Marjorie Esme Nicol

Lovely service for Marjorie Nicol,  89, a member of the '3 Oclock' club'  I belong to was held  this evening at the Christ Episcopal church on the Bloomfield /Glen Ridge line on Bloomfield Avenue. What a beautiful church - 1890's made of local brownstone with medieval arches and wood beams - just gorgeous. http://www.christchurchepiscopal.org and now with Christmas greens it really is lovely.

 An interesting and charming, quiet lady - spending a good portion of her professional life in Sierra Leone - working as a physician specialist - Marjorie had a Masters in Public Health from Columbia U - and an honorary doctorate of science from Barat College in Chicago. Large extended family in the area - when I asked who had catered the lovely supper - I was told it was Charles Nicol's cousins - whom Marjorie had helped generate a connection with the Sierra Leone community. ( a cousin helped me get out of a snow-packed parking space - )   Charles Nicol is her son .

We met Marjorie when one of our members chatted with her on the Glen Ridge jitney -  and invited her to join. She was an enthusiastic member and wonderful researcher for the topics we cover. It was a sad reason for the meeting -but a joy to see the connected relatives and the beautiful church.

Geroge Segal Gallery, MontclairState University

Andy Warhol, Through a Glass Starkly, Photos - Polaroid and black and white photographs - taken between 1970 and 1987 - donated to more than 180 educational institutions as part of the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program ...they ' reveal a new dimension of one of the most enigmatic and influential artists of our time'  Exhibit runs til December 12, 2009- Gallery hours - Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10 - 5pm   http://www.montclair.edu/selgallery - You can park on the 4th level of the DECK - and just walk into the gallery.

Terra Cotta Warriors coming to DC

Some of the 7,000 warriors  created for the  Chin dynasty, 246 BC will be in DC from NOvember to March at the National Geographic gallery; http://www.Nationalgeographic.com/terracotta and should be a great exhibit - Buried for centuries and discovered in 1974, the individual figures are part of the memorial he created for his after life - http://www.terracottawarriors.com is another site - horses, chariots, servants, musicians etc a whole city for his afterlife. All facing East - the direction of  the areas he conquered during his rule - he came to power at age 13 and waged many wars. Not popular but he left a memorial - plus having started the first of the China Walls. 

Victorian Society Meeting on Maps - Monday 10/18

Meeting Monday evening at the Montclair Women's club at 82 Union Street at 8 pm by Maureen O'Brien on historic maps -and historic NJ rail road maps - meeting free to members, $ 5 to guests and the best refreshments -

NJ Transit announces Weekend service!!

Great news that NJ Transit has announced starting weekend service to NYC starting in November. This means service to either mid-town ( change in Newark for the Penn station location). This is great for sh shoppers to the city, theater goers and visa versa  - for New Yorkers to come to Montclair on the train> Trains will leave from the Bay station only in Montclair - but will stop in Glen Ridge and Bloomfield 

Roof Top Real Estate - Stadium

Curious to see the new High School and Stadium that has been built on the old site of the Roosevelt stadium in Union city - we went to the ' dedication' this evening - at 5 pm - braving the Rt . 3 New York bound traffic - good old Paterson Plank Road as a 'back way' A seven story 200 car deck on Kerrigan and 24th street - and a stadium above part of the High School, A tour of the high school is available next Saturday at 11 am - Tonight, at 7 pm the Union City HS was playing Ferris High - ( an old Emerson Rivalry match). The dedication amounted to a box supper and a T shirt ( nice quality cotton) However, billed as a ' meet your classmates' event - it was hard to recognize anyone I might have known 55 years ago. So I talked to a few of the white or non-haired people - first to determine if they were from Emerson, or Union Hill. Met one woman from class of ' 50, from Union Hill and one Fellow  from Emerson' 48 who had played basket ball with all my classmates. (whom he said were all dead now!)

Maybe if they do it again next year - there  could be placards identifying the classes at each table, or name tags or a  guest sign up  - especially since there is even an alumni group raising money for scholarships.

The view from th 7th floor of the parking garage is great - with the Empire State building shining in the distance,. A pleasant trip - those I talked to remembered my father's store, on 24th and Central, Guido's Market ( that was the partner he bought it from) My father was  ' Idamo'

Union City Roosevelt Stadium dedication!

Just had an invite to the dedication of the new Emerson High School stadium on Kennedy Boulevard in Union City - the Union City school new stadium. And the class of 1950 was included in the event. The stadium sits on top of the high school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  The date is Sept 25 at 5 pm. I might go. I think it is being called the Union City  Roosevelt  Stadium ......the old Emerson High and Union Hill combined -
