The Seven Oaks neighborhood (http://www.SevenOaksCommunityAlliance.org) arranged for a charming and informative charitable evening to raise funds for the restoration of the Carnegie Library in Orange- (Main and Essex) the corner stone is visible and states June 25, 1900 - designed by Stanford White. The speaker was the great grandson of the architect -Sam White - who gave a marvelous slide and lecture presentation the works of White, and also of those in collaboration with McKim and Mead. Several members of our local Northern NJ chapter of the Victorian Society were there - and enjoyed the program, Some of us remembering the visit we made to Rosecliff in Newport one year, for a national Victorian Society annual meeting in 1983....Samuel Whites' book, 'Stanford White, Architect' which he wrote together with his wife, Elizabeth White was available for purchase = and several of us took advantage of the opportunity. The photos are great too!
Program was in the old newspaper building-the Chronicle that now houses a new restaurant, Mandeville, a Jamaican blend menu -very pretty facility and very good food - 15 south Essex Street -http://www.MandevilleNJ.com. The have a special for a while - bring 3 and 1 eats free ....
We toured the library too- a Tiffany window, beautiful fireplace with carved sides - original marble columns and woodwork. The copper dome needs repair - plus many other building elements need work. The building had support from the Stickler family when it was built - in memory of their son. Interesting evening - with fascinating history.
